Soundbar Mounting: Placement & Setup in Lexington, KY

Published: August 14, 2026 · By Lexington TV Guys

There's a pattern we see on almost every TV mounting job in Lexington: the TV gets hung beautifully, the homeowner steps back, and then the new soundbar sits on the media stand — or worse, on the floor — because nobody planned where it goes. The picture looks great and the sound comes from the wrong place.

A soundbar is a simple speaker, but getting it to sound right is about placement, mounting, and wiring — and each one has a right way to do it. Here's the trade knowledge we use on every soundbar installation.

The One Rule: Ear Level, Not Eye Level

Your TV gets positioned for your eyes; your soundbar gets positioned for your ears. The speakers inside a soundbar are aimed straight out, and they sound their best when they're at roughly the same height as your ears while you're seated — for most living rooms, that's somewhere between 34" and 42" off the floor, depending on the couch and who's watching.

That's why the most common setup — the TV centered at eye level with the soundbar directly beneath it — usually works out naturally. When the TV is mounted higher, above a fireplace for example, the soundbar problem gets harder: keep the bar on the mantel and the sound arrives over your head; keep it at ear level and it's disconnected from the picture.

Where a Soundbar Goes (and Where It Doesn't)

One placement rule that surprises people: a soundbar doesn't have to be centered under the TV. If the seating is off to one side — a sectional, a breakfast bar view — angling the bar toward the main seats often sounds better than perfectly centering it under the screen.

Mounting Options for a Wall-Mounted Soundbar

Once the TV is on the wall, there are three clean ways to mount the soundbar under it:

Whatever the bracket, the same anchoring rules apply as for the TV: brackets need to land on studs or use anchors rated for the bar's weight, and the mounting height gets decided before anything is drilled. When we mount a soundbar as part of a TV installation, we measure the gap between the bottom of the TV and the top of the bar, and we center it on the TV — not on the wall.

Wiring a Soundbar the Right Way

A soundbar needs two connections: power and audio. The audio connection is the one that matters, and the best one is HDMI ARC or eARC — a single HDMI cable from the TV's ARC-labeled port to the soundbar. It carries the sound from everything the TV plays — streaming apps, cable box, game console — and the TV remote controls the volume. One cable, one remote.

For a wall-mounted soundbar, the wires should be planned before the bracket goes up: the audio cable and power run behind the wall or along a tidy path, and the TV's own cables get managed at the same time. In-wall runs need low-voltage wall plates and, in many Lexington homes built to modern code, a permitted outlet placement — that's where our in-wall wiring and outlet add-ons come in.

Smart TV and streaming setup is $35 if you want the apps logged in and organized while we're there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you mount a soundbar under a wall-mounted TV?

Yes — it's one of our most common add-ons. We use a soundbar bracket or an under-TV bracket, center it on the TV, place it at ear level, and run the wiring cleanly. It's a $40 add-on with any TV installation.

Will a soundbar block my TV's remote sensor?

It can, on some TV models. We check the clearance before mounting and position the bar so the TV's IR window stays open — or use a bracket that holds the bar low enough to clear it.

Does a soundbar need to be centered under the TV?

Not always. If your seating is off to one side, angling the bar toward the main seats can sound noticeably better. We place it for where you actually sit.

Can I mount a soundbar myself?

Anyone handy can hang a bar on a wall. What's harder is doing it without blocking the TV sensor, hiding the wires, and matching the height to your seating — which is why most of our soundbar work comes as an add-on to a TV mount.
